Radar Love

So we live in Old Town Alexandria. When people here talk about pre-war buildings they’re talking about the Civil War. How we managed to live in this town,i’ll never know. But it’s lovely and we often walk at night on the cobblestone streets lit by flickering gas street lights. Because I walk slow due to Parkinson’s Disease, my wife and sons know I want them to walk at their normal speed, not mine, so I’m usually a block or so behind them. One evening we we out for a stroll, me a block behind my wife and son, who were engaged in a conversation, when I made a noise. I think I exclaimed at the way the moonlight danced on the Potomac River, it wasn’t loud. But my wife, immediately turned and asked me if I was OK. And I realized that no matter what she’s doing, no matter the conversation she’s in, her radar is on and it is watching out for me. Maybe I didn’t understand before, even though she left a job she loved to get better insurance for me, and then moved from our suburban home to Old Town so I’d have fun places to walk around while she worked. Even after all that, her commitment didn’t dawn on me until she stopped a block away and turned because I made a small sound. It is humbling to be the object of her radar. So Parkinson’s bring it on, and you better bring some friends, cause I’ve got a lot to fight for, and I will never give up.
